Jonathan Hillhouse

I was born in England, 1980.  Studied Art History and Popular Music at Liverpool University after which I moved to Japan in 2004.

It was on the small island of Tanegashima where my photography blossomed. Using a wide range of 35mm and medium format cameras and shooting on a wide variety of films, my photographs attempted to capture the tradition and modernity prevalent in everyday Japan.

I will return to Japan in October 2010 and will be based in Oita City, Oita! 楽しみ!

  12. Your photographs are most beautiful. I found your website on accident while looking for the meaning of my name and your name in japanese. ジョナサン[jiyonasan] I only know that Ji means wisdom. I would love to go to japan one day. Are Cherry blossoms really beautiful? What is the culture like? or What is Tokunoshima like? I want to ask so many questions, but I think I’m running out of room to write. Umm… TTYL! I hope so at least.

  13. Hi Jonathan!

Thanks for dropping by! I have just sent you an e-mail, hope you make it to Japan some day!

  14. Is it beautiful,
    The cherry blossoms that grow,
    and fall on the ground?

  15. Now this stupid computer makes replying work. Sorry about earlier. I wanted to ask you some questions on Japan, but my computer wouldn’t let me put anything. First I wanted to say Your pictures are very beautiful. Second I wanted to tell you how I stumbled on your website, because I was searching for what the name Jonathan(ジョナサン)[Jiyonasan] means only to figure out that Ji means wisdom. So… ummm what is Japan like? What is the culture like? Is it all so beautiful?

  16. Ooops. Heh. I now feel like and idiot, because I didn’t see my first post. I’ll quit posting now. Gomen nasai gozaimasu!

  17. Bloody good photos here …. I can see myself visiting on a regular basis.

  18. very awesome stuff here. i’m glad to have stumbled upon your blog. I’m another Jonathan in Japan. I’ll definately be coming back here often to see this great work.

  20. Mr. Hillhouse my name is Hayden James and I’m an amateur photographer. I’d like it if, providing you have the time, you visit my blog and let me know what you think. I’m looking for sound advice from experienced and passionate professionals. I hope you enjoy my stuff as much as I did yours!

  21. Your photographs are so beautiful. I also came over your site by accident, but what a great accident.
I really admire your style, technique and the feelings in your images.

  22. Hello Johnathon,

I happened to see your InfraRed Color Image of “Jogger” and was intrigued by it. I used to take a lot of InfraRed and other offbeat
Film Emulsions like Perutz and HIE, Scala etc. Anyway, I am getting ready to unpack my Hasselblad and take B/W Infrared pics of my Nephew’s Wedding. I just like the Spacial and Color Banding of the Jogger Photograph. I think it’s unique. Can you still get Scala 200 in the UK. They made 120, also. I would like to keep in touch. Nice Eye.

  23. If you are in England now, you’ll be able to buy the current issue of Monocle, that spends some words on your beloved Tanegashima. When I read the name on the magazine I remember I’d read it the first time here on your blog.

  24. Sensibility, technique and “eye”, good photographer…
    Regards, Xavier Gautruche

  25. HI Jonathan! I have been amazed by your photography for some time. I first found your blog through my search about Tanegashima. My wife two children and I are planning to move there in 2011. We have visited this summer. What a great place. I saw one of your pictures in the moon bar. I am very interested in your photography. I shoot using 35mm and also started using an Mamiya 645j recently. My background is in 16mm film and sculpture. But that was a long time ago. I would love to quiz you a bit more about your photogaphy techniques and what it was like to live in Tanegashima.
