Film Photography
Welcome to my new blog! I was browsing the wordpress site and came across this cool and minimalist template causing me to ditch my rather old fashioned livejournal blog. The blacks and greys you see before you provide a much nicer backdrop for displaying photos and wow, I’ve been taking a lot of them recently.

I started using a Holga earlier this year and have been experimenting with film photography ever since. I picked up two Russian cameras, a Lubitel and a Kiev relatively cheaply from ebay. Stepping back from the digital age, I tend to take a lot longer when arranging a composition, not wanting to waste too many rolls of film! I think this has resulted in an improvement in my photography and, as I have learned, the colours of films such as Fuji Nautra and Velvia really are exquisite.

I rarely bothered to think about terms such as depth of field or aperture when I was using my digital camera and now, without an auto mode to fall back on, setting everything manually has really helped me in understanding the basics of photography.
The main camera I’m using at the moment is an Olympus OM-2, a Japanese marvel from the mid to late 70s. Its famed Zuiko lenses are a pleasure to use and I’m still in awe of its extremely satisfying shutter sound – a fantastic “click!”
Check out my flickr page for archived photos, I look forward to writing again on this blog, letting you know about everything of interest in Tanegashima!

Hey Jonathan,
According to recent Los Angeles Times article more than 80 % of the fine art photographers prefer conventional films, vs digital camera. You captured everyday life of islanders very well, especially Undoukai. By the way Tanegashima is my home town but away for a long time. I stumbled into your site when I was searching for Tanegashima. Your pictures made me nostalgic. I’ll keep checking your blog time to time. Keep taking good pictures.
Hi Vicente,
That’s an interesting statisitc! Hardly surprising when you look at the colours that negative and slide film have to offer.
Oh cool, you must know Tanegashima well. Thanks for your compliments, I really enjoy photographing everyday life here on the island – 田舎が大好き!
Hey J, this blog is stunning on the strength of your photography, it’s really coming along very well and puts my travel snaps to shame. Keep it up and I hope to see this site updated frequently!
The Man in Vietnam
Thanks for the compliments, I hope you’re enjoying Vietnam!
[...] This time last year my interest in film photography was in its infancy and I had just invested in an OM-2 SLR and some nice Fuji Natura film (see this blog post). [...]
